About Flourishing Systems Foundation

We catalyze the emergence of life-aligned systems through translational research, transformative education, venture incubation, and community co-creation.

Why Flourishing?

We choose the word flourishing because it points to something beyond survival — beyond managing crisis, or optimizing for efficiency. It asks a deeper question: what actually sustains vitality — in a person, a community, a living system — across time?

Flourishing is a natural progression of Progress and Abundance, not a rejection of them. Both narratives have driven real advances, often on the assumption that innovation and growth can always outpace any limit. But planetary boundaries are real, and growth has real costs — to ecosystems, communities, and future generations — that don't always show up in the metrics we use to track success here and now. It's time these narratives evolved.

Flourishing asks a fuller question: not just how much we can grow, but what we want to sustain, and for whom, meaningfully. We believe that the fuller question is what lets humanity and all living systems genuinely thrive through this moment of technological change — not by rejecting progress, but by insisting it serve life. That's the path we call Existential Hope.

Our research and the ecosystem of communities that we are part of exist to explore this question together — and to tend the living systems that make lasting flourishing possible.

Our Story

Flourishing Systems Foundation's approach is the distillation of decades of combined research and lived experience shared between our co-founders, Mingzhu He and Lauren Hebert. That work found its institutional home in February 2024, seeded by a grant from the Foresight Institute's and the Future of Life Institute's Transformative AI New Institution Design for Existential Hope Challenge — support that let an existing conviction become organized practice.

Since then, we've designed, built, incubated, and collaborated with more than 20 Catalytic Communities — place-based, online, temporary, and decentralized — each one a living laboratory testing what actually helps people find connection, creativity, and hope amid change. Some have grown into lasting homes, like our Human Flourishing Community in San Francisco and Northern Commons in Saint Paul, Minnesota. All of them continue to teach us what this work requires.
